Varsity Boys Cross-Country raced to a host of personal records on Tuesday, 9/17 en route to splitting a pair of meets at George School. The Roos bounded past the hosts 25-30 (low score wins) and fell to Westtown 16-43 behind impressive performances from a number of runners. Von Curry ’22 covered the rolling 3.1 mile course in 18:20 to finish 6th overall out of 61 competitors. Dexter Zapf ’22 (18:29), Noah Vinogradov ’21 (19:00), Keith Robinson ’23 (20:08), and Toby Avery ’20 (20:13) rounded out the AFS top five, with Noah Pearce ’21 (21:22), Liam Merritt ’21 (21:29), and Justin Forbes ’21 (21:45) following in a close pack. AFS is 2-2 on the dual meet season and participates next in the Council Rock North Invitational this Saturday.

Varsity Girls Cross-Country came up short against George School (19-42) and Westtown (24-33) on Tuesday, 9/17, but saw four of five runners achieve personal best times. Charly Avril ’21 was just 22 seconds off the winning time with her 3rd place finish in 22:28. Mya Osborne ’20, Samantha Waldman ’23, Jane Mills ’22 and Thera Han ’20 also placed for the Roos who run next on Saturday in the Council Rock North Invitational.

Varsity Boys Soccer battled strong opponents and injuries the past two weeks, dropping 3-0 matches to Penn Charter on Friday, 9/13 and Moorestown Friends on Tuesday, 9/17 to fall to 2-3 on the season. Against MFS, Max Emery ’21, Hadley Julye ’22 and Miles Kurtz ’22 applied constant offensive pressure on the Foxes, hampering the visitors’ attempts to play the ball out of the back. Trailing 1-0 with 8 minutes to go, AFS was unable to dent MFS’s defense and allowed 2 late goals for the final margin. Jonah Fine ’20, Dexter Dugdale ’20, and Josh Eisen ’20 provided staunch defense in front of goalie Noah Mass ’20. AFS travels up Huntingdon Pike on Friday to play Academy of the New Church at 3:45pm in a key Friends Schools League matchup.

Junior Varsity Boys Soccer opened the 2019 season at 2-0-0 after shutout victories over Perkiomen School (5-0) on Friday, 9/13 and Moorestown Friends (1-0) on Tuesday, 9/17.  Against Perk, Daniel Woodlin ’22, Finn Hawley ’22, Ruairi Rossi ’24 and Cameron Benfer ’24 found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Dillon Letherer ’23 turned aside 4 shots to earn the shutout. Against MFS, James Lewis ’21 scored the deciding goal late in the first half before a stiff defensive effort from Lucas Piccinini ’22, Shalen Farahi ’23, and Ronen Rabinowitz ’23 among others kept the Foxes at bay. Dillon Letherer turned aside 7 shots, including a fingertip deflection off the crossbar to earn his second clean sheet in as many starts. The Roos visit ANC tomorrow for a 3:45pm matchup with the Lions.

Varsity Tennis dropped a pair of 4-1 results to Shipley School and Perkiomen School this week. On both days, AFS’s 2nd doubles team of Bella Washington-Vazquez ’23 and Belle Mele ’23 prevailed in their matches. Amira Parker ’20 (#1 singles), Grace Sousa ’22 (#2 singles), Zoe Gittleman ’22 (#3 singles), Cady Tran ’20 & Sophie Cameron ’20  (#1 doubles) and Lily Goldstein ’23 (#1 or #2 doubles) round out the starting lineup for the 2019 Roos. AFS hosts ANC tomorrow at 3:45pm in a Friends Schools League clash

Junior Varsity Tennis split their first two matches of the season this week, falling 4-1 to Shipley School on Tuesday, 9/17 before upending Perkiomen School by the same score on Wednesday, 9/18. Against Perkiomen, Jiahe Wu ’22, Maeve Callaghan ’21 and Gabby Wexler ’21 competed in singles play for AFS. The team’s next match is on Friday, 9/27 against SCH Academy.

Varsity Girls Soccer topped New Foundations Charter School 3-0 on Friday, 9/13 in their home opener. Brianna Davis ’20, Ally Muller ’22 and Maggie Waldman ’22 notched goals against NFCS while Sophia Mele ’21 contributed 2 assists. Lilli Wallace-Larkin ’21 continued her strong start to the season by controlling the run of play from her central defender position. Goalkeeper Clare Robinson ’21 turned aside 5 Bulldog shots in the win. This week, the Roos dropped games at Notre Dame Academy and Agnes Irwin to fall to 2-4 on the season. They open Friends Schools League play next week at George School on Tuesday.

Middle School Cross-Country had their first 2-mile race of the season yesterday, hosting Friends Select. AFS’s top-five finishers included PJ S. ’24 who placed first overall, Marcellus J. ’25 in 3rd place, Grace D. ’26, Wyatt C. ’27, and Gus D. ’26. The Runnin’ Roos travel to Friends Select Fairmount Park course on Wednesday 9/25 for their next meet.

Middle School Boys A Soccer dropped a narrow 3-2 result to Calvary Christian Academy in their season opener on Tuesday, 9/17. The Roos bounced back the next day with a 5-3 win over Friends Select. Against Select, Theo S. ’24, Cameron B. ’24 and Marcus C. ’25 were among the goal scorers. Charlie B. ’24 and Jared S. ’24 split time in the goal for the Roos. Next weekthe team travels to GFS on Monday and MFS on Wednesday.

Middle School Girls Soccer evened their season record at 1-1 with a 5-2 win versus Friends Select on Wednesday, 9/18 following a season-opening 3-0 defeat by Calvary Christian. Against Friends Select, Angela S. ’25, Sasha V. ’24 and Catrina R. ’25 were among the many Roos who had strong games. The team continues their season next week with home games against GFS (Monday, 9/23) and MFS (Wednesday, 9/25).
