Information for Parents and Guardians of International Students
Welcome to the Abington Friends School page for parents and guardians of international students. This section includes your necessary arrival dates and the links to the most important information for your time in Upper School.
Because we understand how difficult it is for students to start the school year when they are experiencing jet lag, we urge them to plan their flights a few days in advance of the beginning of the first day of school, and the first day back from vacations, so that they return to school rested and ready to begin. All students are required to attend classes until the first day of each vacation.

Getting Ready to Start the School Year at AFS:
Each student in the Upper School should have his or her own laptop (手提用电脑), which is brought to school each day and used in most classes. We also use them for our school emails, the internet, and the various class documents shared with each of us on Google Drive. It is really important that everyone has a laptop at the beginning of the AFS New Student Orientation.
You can either buy your laptop in China and bring it here, or buy it in the U.S. when you arrive and before orientation starts. Please check our guidelines about required technology before purchasing a laptop for school use.
At AFS, students buy their own school books online at the beginning of each semester of the school year after they get their class schedule. Most classes are year-long classes, so most of the books you buy in September will last you throughout the year. You will be getting your first semester class schedule on the first day of school. Your teachers will tell you what books and calculator you need to buy. In order to be ready to buy books, you will need a credit card (信用卡) to use when purchasing the books online. Please work with your agency to get a credit card by the first day of school.
Please check the AFS Booklist after you receive your course roster to find out what books are required for your courses.
Students at AFS spend time reading during the summer break. Each student is expected to pick a book from the Summer Reading Book List and read it by the beginning of school in the fall. In Upper School, students meet in small groups during the month of September to discuss the book they read. Please look at the list of books we are reading this summer and pick one you think you would enjoy reading. Then sign up for the book that you have chosen. You will need to purchase it between now and the summer so you will have time to read it by September.
