AFS is one of 15 schools in the region that are piloting a new program called the Independence Awards, which highlights the best in scholastic musical theatre. The “adjudicators” in that program are theatre educators and professionals such as directors, actors and playwrights. Adjudicators who attended the Upper School play “Peter and the Starcatcher” wrote some glowing reviews about the musical. Here are a couple of excerpts:
“The entire cast was excellent. What impressed me the most was that the students acted, as opposed to just reciting lines, and they acted by interacting with each other. All of them had very strong stage presence. A few of the performers really stood out for me, namely Peter and Black Stache. They both looked like seasoned pros and I hope they continue performing in some capacity throughout their lives. The comic moments were well done and well delivered, also not an easy task. It was a very nice combination of subtlety and slapstick.”
“From the clean scenic design to the two-piece pit, just looking and hearing, you would think you walked in to a professional house. This play with music was well choreographed scene by scene by scene. The fluidity is to be applauded. The students really reflected their love of this piece. A truly educational production for each student. The body, the movement, the vocal prowess, the partnering. Engaging, charming, and masterful storytelling. I would hire each and every student to work on my team.”
Upper School Theatre Teacher Megan Bellwoar Hollinger said AFS will continue to participate in the CAPPIES awards program, and will enter the spring play in that competition as the Independence Awards focus solely on musical theatre.
