About the Extended Day Program
The Extended Day Program at Abington Friends School takes place before and after school hours and offers a safe, fun and supportive environment to meet the needs of students and families during before and after-school hours. The Extended Day program also provides programming on select school closings, including in-service days, parent conference days and some vacation days.
The Extended Day program provides early morning childcare beginning at 7:30 a.m. for all students ages 3 through fourth grade and after-school care until 6 p.m.
The program serves students in the preschool program through fourth grade.
The Extended Day Program is an extension of the experience we cultivate daily within our 3-and 4-year-old and lower school programs. Through this program, children continue to play and learn through a variety of hands-on experiences. Whether it is through arts and crafts, games, music or sports (when age appropriate), the AFS Extended Day Program provides safe and enjoyable care for AFS students 3 years old through fourth grade.
Activities for the program vary by day and age. Outdoor play is an important component of the program for children of all ages, and may include free play or organized activities and field games like soccer and basketball. A rotation of art activities, games, library and reading time and fun events like a regular Friday dance party round out the program.
3:00 – 3:15 p.m. Students are escorted to the Extended Day program
3:15 p.m. Afternoon Circle and Snack Time

Students in first through fourth grade have the opportunity for supervised homework completion with academic support from an Extended Day faculty member in our homework center. The center is open from Monday-Thursday, 3:30-5 p.m. in the lower level classroom space.
Optional enrichment classes are open to students in the 3-and 4-year-old program through sixth grade as noted in the course descriptions. Enrichment classes vary by grade and season. In the past, some of the courses offered include chess, Spanish language, clay creations, soccer and cooking.
There is an additional fee to participate in these optional offerings, and students who are not part of the regular extended day program may also register for these classes. A listing of optional enrichment classes, associated fees and registration information is distributed to parents prior to the Fall and Winter/Spring sessions.
The following annual fee schedule applies to all children 3 years old through 4th grade:

Please contact Charity Hendrikson, Extended Day Coordinator if you have questions regarding extended day or dial 215-837-9053 for grades 1-4 and 267-784-4083 for Early Childhood and Kindergarten.
Family members must be prompt in picking up their children at the end of the day. After 6 p.m., parents will be charged a flat fee of $15 for every additional 15 minutes of care. Late fees are billed through the business office. We ask that you reserve late pickups for emergency use only.
Any student from age 3 through fourth grade can arrange drop-in care at any time during the year as space permits.
A $30 per day fee is charged for drop-in and/or additional days. Families can arrange drop in days by contacting the Lower School office. Drop-in fees are due in cash or check at the time of pick-up. There is an additional fee for faculty in-service and parent conference days.
The Extended Day Program will not operate during holidays, snow days or in the event of an early dismissal. However, the program will operate during faculty in-service days, parent conferences and select days during Winter and Spring Breaks. Childcare will be offered to families at these times.
The AFS Extended Day faculty members are Lower School classroom teachers and other part-time school personnel. The Extended Day faculty participates in our opening days in-service training and are seen throughout our daily program and act as substitutes when needed.
