As the spring season of AFS Athletics nears its end, here are a few recent highlights.
Varsity Baseball continued their impressive program rebuild by winning the 2025 Friends Schools League Quaker Cup tournament by virtue of a 10-3 defeat of George School on Monday. Two years ago, AFS Baseball withdrew from the Friends Schools League for the 2023 season due to an insufficient roster size. After restarting the program and recording a 4-10 won-loss record last year, the Roos maintained an upward trajectory in 2025 compiling an 11-6 record to date, capped off with the title in the Quaker Cup postseason tournament for teams that do not qualify for the FSL Championship bracket. Loren Koenig ‘27 earned the win on the mound for AFS against George, pitching 6 strong innings, allowing just 1 earned run and striking out 6. He helped himself at the plate as well with a hit and 2 runs batted in. Jarius Ford ‘26 smacked a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the 6th inning to help open up the game and added 3 walks and 3 stolen bases on the day. Sam Calandra-Jayne ‘26 closed out the contest on the mound, as he had in the Roos’ first round win over Barrack last week, and also added 2 runs and an RBI of his own.
Varsity Spring Tennis wrapped up their season on Monday with a 5-0 defeat of visiting New Foundations Charter School on Senior Day. Teammates and coaches celebrated the soon-to-be AFS graduates Dylan Steinberg ‘25, Ethan Farma ‘25 and John Mazzaccaro ‘25 prior to the match during which all three Roos prevailed 8-0 over their opponents.
Varsity Lacrosse lauded their 12th grade players on Monday at their Senior Day matchup with visiting Sacred Heart Academy. Mayalondyn Gray ‘25, Ariana Ellis-Clarke ‘25, Esa McCants ‘25, Jada Melville ‘25 and manager Mira Shandell ‘25 received posters and flowers from their teammates and coaches as a thanks for all that they contributed to the AFS Lacrosse program in this, and past, years. Sacred Heart topped AFS 10-5 in the game, with Indie DuTot ‘27 leading the Roos’ offense with 3 goals.
