A Message from Mark Smith, Middle School Director
Welcome to the AFS Middle School
Middle School is such an important time in a child’s life—and at AFS, we don’t see it as just a bridge between Lower and Upper School. We see it as a meaningful chapter all its own, full of growth, self-discovery, and connection. It's a time for students to grow, belong and be known!
Relationships Come First
One of the most important parts of our program is that every student has an advisor—a caring adult who really knows them and is there to check in, cheer them on, and help them navigate the ups and downs of Middle School. Advisory groups create space for honest conversations, laughter, and a real sense of belonging.
We Support the Whole Child
Middle Schoolers are growing fast—not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. Our approach meets them where they are, helping them build confidence, curiosity, and strong habits of learning. We know that when students feel supported and connected, they do their best thinking.
A Space Designed for Them
Our learning spaces reflect the energy and creativity of this age. Classrooms are flexible, the campus is open and green, and students have plenty of room to move, make, play, and explore. Each day includes a moment of quiet reflection—time to pause and check in with themselves.
Grounded in Values
Quaker values like community, integrity, and simplicity guide how we teach, learn, and treat one another. Whether students are teaming up on a project, volunteering in the community, or navigating a new friendship, they’re learning what it means to lead with purpose and heart.
