Home & School

Every parent and primary caregiver of an AFS student is automatically a member of the Home and School Association (HSA), which supports students, teachers, and the entire AFS community in three ways:

  • As a communications network, HSA disseminates information regarding events and promotes the school in a variety of ways through the AFS Connects initiative. HSA also acts as a liaison between the community of families and School administration in the expression of comments and concerns relative to student life at AFS.
  • As a support group, HSA organizes volunteers to staff events and provide other services and resources to support school events.
  • As event planners, HSA performs an important social function, providing our community of families with the opportunity to become active participants in campus life, thus giving the adults in the community a chance to get to know one another.

Events and Committees

Every year, HSA organizes a variety of events to build community and foster a welcoming environment for our families. HSA also organizes teacher-appreciation events. We rely on participation by the community of families to make all of these events successful. Those who take advantage of the many ways to get involved tell us that their experience at AFS is greatly enriched, and many attribute strong friendships with other families to participating in a HSA activity. It can be a lot of fun!

Arbor Day: A long time tradition celebrating nature that culminates with sweet treats following the Arbor Day festivities.

Post Prom: Initially conceived as a way to keep our prom-goers safe on Prom night, the annual Post Prom has evolved into an enjoyable and much-anticipated part of the prom experience.

Appreciation Events: Each division holds teacher-appreciation events over the course of the year. Keep an eye on emails for opportunities to volunteer to provide food and/or help with set up, serving and clean up.

Divisional Events: The clerks for each division plan various events, activities and community-service projects that are age-appropriate.

Post Prom: The Post Prom Committee works with the student Prom Committee to plan the event.

Community Care Committee: This group is “on-call” to help families in our community who are dealing with illness or loss and need our support and care.

All Voices Family Alliance: This is a diverse group of dedicated parents and primary caregivers at AFS who are taking action steps to help build an inclusive community. The alliance is open to all community members who want to participate in ongoing conversations and activities that support the school’s diversity vision. The group’s goal is to lead efforts that advance the mission of a non-violent and anti-biased community.

EcoFest: An all-school celebration of outdoor play and sustainability. Past events have included the Nature Playdate, a Nature Build event, electronics recycling and paper shredding, donation drives and more.

Get Involved

Read all AFS emails

We cannot stress the importance of keeping abreast of campus life. This is the best way to fully participate in all that AFS has to offer your student and family.

Know your grade clerk

This person is a conduit of information. Clerks can point you in the direction of any information you may need. By reaching out when you have questions or concerns, HSA can help you engage fully in AFS campus life.

Sign up to volunteer

Some volunteer activities are long-term commitments, while others require very little time. Keep an eye out for the volunteer opportunities that are right for you, and when one comes along, sign up to help!

Join a committee

Joining a committee is a great way to meet other parents and to help make a difference in the school community.

Be an AFS Connector

This group of volunteers helps AFS gain visibility across the region. AFS has students coming from more than 70 zip codes and you can help us spread the word about our special school in your neighborhood and at your workplace by posting flyers and displaying lawn signs. AFS Connectors also help with admission and marketing events.

Show your AFS spirit

There are many ways to show your school spirit. We encourage all families to attend AFS sporting events, concerts and theatrical productions. Opportunities to donate items and sell (and purchase!) spirit wear help to support these programs. Other ways you can show school spririt are by wearing AFS gear, talking about AFS to your friends and neighbors with school-age children, sharing AFS news and events through social media and putting up lawn signs for AFS admission events.

Be a life-long learner

There are many opportunities to continue your own growth by attending lectures and workshops, discussing books, and joining conversations about raising children in today’s world. In addition, HSA has created a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Guide that is available on the school website which many 7th grade families have found helpful.

Follow AFS on social media

AFS has an active Facebook page ( and several active twitter accounts, including @AbingtonFriends for school updates, and @AFS_Roos for athletics news and live updates on game days.
