This Week in Athletics | Friday, February 27
Jeff Bond, AFS Athletics

Vast snow coverage notwithstanding, the winter season has just about come to a close with only a few individual state and national qualifiers left to compete before we flip the calendar over to the spring season of AFS Athletics. The spring season begins for upper school student-athletes next week with baseball, softball, lacrosse and track & field starting on Monday afternoon. Tennis, golf and ultimate frisbee will start later in the week. The Middle School spring campaign will start on Wednesday, March 11. Read on for updates on postseason exploits for a number of winter season Roos.

This Sunday, Lucy Byrd ‘28 competes for the second consecutive year in the Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association State Championship Meet at Penn State University. Lucy has qualified for this event in the 200 meters, and she will be on the track with the fastest sprinters from all high schools throughout the Keystone State. Good luck, Lucy.

Last weekend, four AFS Varsity Wrestling team members competed in the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University. Khalil Jimenez ‘27, Maxwell Berthier ‘27, Myles Griffin ‘26 and Amillyiona Green ‘28 all qualified to attend National Preps based on their performances at late-season state-level tournaments. Qualification for Khalil, Maxwell and Myles came through top-6 placement in their weight classes at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools State Championship Tournament. That trio was joined by Cole Rodgers ‘28 and Matteo Abu El-Haj ‘30 as top-8 state placers, the most in AFS Wrestling program history. Congrats!

Amillyiona Green placed well at a girls wrestling qualifier in mid-February to earn an invite to National Preps Girls Wrestling Championships at Lehigh. Seeded 6th in her weight class, Amillyiona won 3 matches over higher seeds to advance to the championship. Though she came up short in the final, she earned National Preps All-American status for her second place finish, joining alum Bella Washington-Vazquez ‘23 as an AFS Wrestling All-American. Way to go, Amillyiona!
