The spring season of AFS Athletics is in full swing with 15 teams of Roos in 7 sports taking to the fields, courts, courses and tracks each afternoon. Over 260 AFS Middle and Upper School students athletes are participating in the program this spring, representing nearly 60% of the 5th-12th grade student population. As a reminder, season schedules for all spring teams are available through the Our Teams tab in the Athletics section of the website. Read on for a few highlights from the recent past for some AFS teams.

Varsity Track & Field opened their meet season this week at the Bayard Rustin Invitational on Wednesday afternoon and recorded a number of impressive accomplishments, especially given the meet’s size of 40 competing schools. On his first throw of the new season, Elliot Bramson ‘27 heaved his javelin 152’9” to set a new school record and claim 1st place overall in the event. Gabe Anderson ‘29 also established a new school mark in the 100m hurdles (15.92) to place 2nd while Gio D’Amico’s ‘27 time of 22.34 in the 200m placed him 8th overall with a new school record. Congrats to Elliot, Gabe and Gio. Blake Bates ‘30 and Auria Brady ‘30 placed 4th and 5th in the mixed gender middle school 800m for the other AFS top-10 finishes. The Roos begin Friends Schools League competition next Tuesday at Westtown.

Kate Timmer ‘27 caused 3 turnovers.

Varsity Baseball came up short a pair of games this week to even their early season record at 2-2. On Monday, the Roos fell 4-2 in a late-game heartbreaker to Calvary Christian Academy when the Cougars plated 2 runs in both the 7th and 8th innings to emerge victorious. Brennan Porreca ‘29 handled CCA from the mound, striking out 7 batters and allowing just 2 hits in 6 innings pitched. Max Cassano ‘29 knocked a pair of hits for the Roos while Sam Lopata ‘26 and Will Hale ‘26 drove in 1 run apiece.
