Life at Camp
There are few things that children look forward to as much as the beginning of their summer vacation. It’s a time when they enjoy the pleasures of being outdoors, swimming, being with their friends and seemingly endless play. In short, it’s a time for kids to have fun. At Abington Friends School, we offer a camp day that is filled with a variety of activities that will make it an unforgettable summer for your child.
Our camp day revolves around the heart of camp: our tent. It’s the central gathering place where Junior, Senior campers come together four times a day as one community. These meetings give counselors, activity coordinators, and administrators a chance to share announcements, host quick competitions or showcase presentations. It’s also a space for counselors to publicly recognize their campers or bunks for standout moments from the day. This practice of camper affirmation is a cornerstone of our camp philosophy. Our staff actively look for meaningful moments in each camper’s day, and the public acknowledgment that follows is something our campers truly value.
The first four periods of the day are structured so that every camper has the opportunity to swim daily. At the beginning of camp, Campers are tested and placed into swim groups based on ability. No camper is permitted in the deep end without passing the “Deep End Test.” Once a camper passes, they receive a bracelet signifying their clearance.
During the remaining three morning periods, campers rotate through a balanced schedule of indoor and outdoor activities. Our programming ensures that no camper spends an entire day exclusively inside or outside. On days with inclement weather, we adjust accordingly.
In the afternoon, campers under the age of six return to their classrooms for a mix of activities and quiet time. Campers ages six and up participate in two elective periods following lunch. These electives give campers the freedom to choose the activities they enjoy most. Selections are made weekly, allowing for ongoing projects with activity specialists or tournament-style events that unfold over several days.
