Equity, Justice & Engagement

At Abington Friends School, we believe diversity, equity, and inclusion are not add-ons—they are core to our identity and mission. This is community work. It’s personal work. And it’s ongoing.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not separate initiatives at Abington Friends School—they are essential to who we are and how we learn together. Rooted in our Quaker values, we believe that each member of our community carries both the responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to a more just and equitable world. This is shared work, and it begins with a commitment to seeing and honoring the full humanity of every individual.

Rooted in Values

Our Quaker principles ground everything we do—fostering integrity, respect, and authentic connection.

Shaped by Justice

We nurture students to act with courage and purpose, working toward a world where fairness guides every choice.

A Shared Responsibility

AFS helps students shoulder the responsibilities inherent to equity and justice with grace, empathy, and pride.

How We Engage: Education, Exposure, Experience

Engagement in this work requires a foundation of education, exposure, and experience:

  • Education allows us to build the knowledge and language to understand systems of inequity and the ways they show up in schools and society.
  • Exposure invites us to listen deeply to diverse perspectives and experiences—those similar to our own and those profoundly different.
  • Experience pushes us to move beyond awareness into action—taking risks, reflecting honestly, and learning how to live our values in community.

We do this work together—across divisions, roles, and backgrounds—knowing it is ongoing and ever evolving. Whether in classrooms, community circles, faculty development, or institutional planning.

Lead. Excel. Thrive.

The Lead. Excel. Thrive. framework integrates Inclusive Leadership, Inclusive Excellence, and Inclusive Wellness to build a thriving school culture. This comprehensive approach will be implemented through four pillars: Institutional Audit, Professional Development, Intergroup Dialogue, and Strategic Planning. Through these initiatives, we're creating sustainable structures that embed DEIJB principles into every aspect of AFS life, ensuring our commitment to equity and belonging remains at the heart of the AFS experience for generations to come.

Institutional Audit

Conducting comprehensive evaluations to identify growth areas and ensure alignment with our DEIJB commitments

Professional Development

Offering targeted learning experiences to equip faculty, staff, and leadership with tools to advance equity and belonging

Intergroup Dialogue

Facilitating structured conversations to build empathy, deepen understanding, and foster mutual care

Strategic Planning

Embedding DEIJB goals into long-term initiatives to sustain and measure institutional progress
