Alumni Spotlight

Matthew MacNaughton

Nearly eight years after finishing her surgical residency, Dr. Nisha Branch ’96 is back in her residency program—this time in anesthesiology. “It’s okay to change your mind,” she argues. Changing specialities is not common in medicine, but Nisha recalls how her AFS mentors encouraged her to experiment and explore, not simply accepting things as they are.

40 Years of Teaching and Learning: A Conversation with Nelson File ’78
Matthew MacNaughton

Nelson File graduated from AFS in 1976—another time of great transition in the world. Raised a Quaker, he was called to serve in his own way, first as a member of the Peace Corps, and then as a teacher. But if you told him before he graduated Abington Friends School that he would spend his whole life abroad—teaching at schools in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and ending his career in Australia as the Head of School of one of the largest Friends’ schools in the world—he would not believe you.
