Moebius Strip Valentines

Students in a Middle School math class were spotted turning Moebius strips into Valentines with just a few quick snips of their scissors. Here’s how Math Teacher Justin Solonynka described the exercise: “Any opportunity to present that math is more than just numbers — that it’s about problem solving, pattern finding, and engagement with our physical world — is exciting to me. While doing some research on Moebius strips, I learned that they have an amazing property: If you tape two strips of opposite chirality together, at right angles to each other, and then cut through the length of each of the strips, the result will be two linked loops in the shape of hearts. It was perfect as a Valentine’s Day project. To see a gallery of photos from this unusual math exercise, go here.
