Wrestling

AFS Wrestling builds strength, discipline, and resilience, helping every athlete rise on the mat and beyond.

Competing across 14 weight classes (106 to 285 pounds), AFS Varsity Wrestling challenges and supports athletes of all sizes and experience levels. The winter season runs from November through February and includes dual meets within the Friends Schools League (FSL), select non-league matchups, and weekend invitational individual and team tournaments.

Led by head coach Matt Mooney, a decorated high school and collegiate wrestler, and assistant coach David Robinson, an AFS teacher, alum, and former Kangaroo grappler, the program emphasizes both team and individual achievement in a competitive yet supportive environment.

Learn the Moves.

Middle School wrestling introduces students to the fundamentals of grappling—stance, balance, takedowns, and escapes—while emphasizing safety, fair competition, and discipline. With practices and matches tailored by weight class and skill, wrestlers gain confidence and a strong technical base.

Test your Mettle.

Developing wrestlers refine their technique through daily drilling, conditioning, and live wrestling while gaining experience in dual meets and weekend tournaments. This stage emphasizes resilience and teamwork, preparing athletes to step confidently onto the Varsity mat.

Grapple for Glory.

Varsity wrestlers compete across 14 weight classes in Friends Schools League matches, PAISAA tournaments, and the National Prep Championships. With a program-first league title in 2025 and multiple collegiate alumni, AFS Wrestling builds athletes who embody grit, discipline, and pride on and off the mat.

Program History at AFS

Established in 1982

In 2024–25, AFS captured its first-ever FSL Wrestling Championship, a milestone that reflects the program’s rising success.

Varsity wrestlers regularly earn double-digit wins per season, reach the podium at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) Tournament, qualify for the prestigious National Prep Wrestling Championships, and continue their careers at the collegiate level.

Since 2010, AFS has produced 40 All-Friends Schools League honorees, 14 wrestlers with 40+ career wins, 33 top-eight finishes at PAISAA, and 16 National Preps qualifiers.

Alumni have gone on to wrestle at New York University, Johns Hopkins, MIT, and East Stroudsburg University. Standout Bella Washington-Vasquez ’23 capped her eight-year AFS wrestling career as a two-time National Preps All-American and Girls National Preps bronze medalist.
