Softball

On the diamond, AFS athletes build skills, confidence, and community—playing with pride and purpose.
A proud member of the Friends Schools League (FSL) since the sport’s League debut in 1989, AFS has built a tradition of excellence on the diamond. The Varsity program welcomes all interested student-athletes in grades 9–12, with skilled 8th graders also eligible to join. When numbers allow, a Junior Varsity team is also formed to provide additional playing opportunities, typically competing in 6–8 games. Varsity and JV teams practice or play five to six days a week from March through May.

Start with Fundamentals.
Middle School softball introduces players to the essentials—hitting, throwing, fielding, and base running—while building teamwork and confidence in a supportive, no-cut environment. With regular practices and 8–10 games per season, students gain meaningful experience and prepare for Upper School.

Own the Mound.
JV athletes sharpen their skills in hitting mechanics, defensive positioning, and game strategy while competing in a 6–8 game schedule. This stage emphasizes learning, camaraderie, and steady improvement, preparing players to step into the pace and intensity of Varsity competition.

Hone your Strike.
Varsity softball continues a tradition of Friends Schools League and PAISAA success, training five to six days per week and competing against top regional opponents. With a history of championships and recent postseason runs, Varsity players embody excellence, resilience, and the spirit of AFS athletics.

Program History at AFS
The program’s early breakthrough came with a championship appearance in 1995, and beginning in the early 2000s, the Kangaroos emerged as a dominant force—reaching the FSL playoffs for 13 consecutive seasons (2001–2013), earning eight title game appearances, four League championships (2003, 2004, 2010, 2011), and a PAISAA state championship in 2011, setting a program record with a 17-3 season.
Today, under the leadership of veteran Philadelphia-area coach Mark Fusetti, AFS Softball is building on its legacy while embracing a new generation of players. In 2025, the Kangaroos returned to the FSL postseason, defeating Germantown Friends and finishing with an 11-5 record—their best since 2013.
