Cross Country

With a focus on skill development, effort, and community, AFS Cross-Country offers meaningful opportunities at the Middle and Upper School levels.

A hallmark of the program is its individualized approach: each athlete follows a training plan designed by experienced coaches—many of whom are former collegiate runners. Cross-Country at Abington Friends School supports runners from grades 5 through 12, blending personal growth with team achievement. The cross-country season runs from late August preseason through the Pennsylvania Independent Schools State Championship Meet in late October.

Start the Journey.

Middle School runners build skills and confidence on 2-mile courses, discovering the joy of racing and the camaraderie of the team.

Go the Distance.

Junior Varsity athletes train alongside Varsity, developing stamina and strategy on 5K courses while preparing to make an impact at the next level.

Chase Greatness Together.

Varsity runners compete in the Friends Schools League and beyond, earning top finishes and honors while carrying on a tradition of excellence and team spirit.

Program History at AFS

Established in 1982

AFS runners have a long history of success in the Friends Schools League (FSL) and at the state level. Since 1982, athletes from both the Girls and Boys programs have earned over 60 top-20 finishes at the FSL Championships.

Many AFS runners have also received All-Friends Schools League and All-State honors and continued their running careers at colleges including Haverford, SCAD, Syracuse, Pitt, Vassar, William Smith and others.

The Boys team earned a program-best 2nd place at the 2021 FSL Championships, while standout runners like Mary Ridenour ’99 (2nd place, 21:32 at FSL Champs) and Ollie Copeland ’24 (All-State, 17:42 at PAISAA) are benchmarks of excellence in the Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls programs.
