Boys Basketball

With a legacy of championships and a culture of character, AFS Boys Basketball prepares student-athletes to lead with skill and heart.
With experienced coaches—most of whom played at the collegiate level—AFS emphasizes skill development, team commitment, and character both on and off the court all year round: during the winter season as well as during pre and post season from March through October. The Varsity team competes in a rigorous FSL schedule alongside a strong slate of non-league matchups designed to challenge student-athletes and prepare them for postseason play in both the FSL and Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) tournaments.
AFS typically fields a Varsity roster of 12–15 players, with additional opportunities at the Junior Varsity and Third Team levels. Open to students in grades 9–12, the JV and Third Teams focus on developing skills and team play, preparing athletes for possible promotion to Varsity. Each team plays a 10–15 game winter schedule, and the JV squad participates in the FSL JV Tournament, which AFS has won eight times—most recently in 2017–18.
Current Head Coach Jon Wessel and lead Assistant Coach Josh Leopold are both AFS alums who are leading the Roos back to levels of success within the highly competitive FSL, highlighted by recent Quaker Cup titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Take the Court.
Middle School boys learn core fundamentals—dribbling, shooting form, defensive positioning, and court awareness—while developing teamwork and sportsmanship. With A and B team placement by experience level, every player gains meaningful minutes in games, laying the groundwork for high school play.

Strengthen the Team.
JV and Third Team athletes practice daily to refine offensive sets, defensive rotations, conditioning, and game IQ. With competitive schedules and opportunities for promotion, players gain confidence through structured coaching, learning to balance individual skill development with the collective needs of the team.

Draft Your Legacy.
Varsity athletes train in a rigorous year-round program emphasizing advanced skill work, strength and conditioning, and film study to sharpen decision-making. Competing in both FSL and non-league schedules, the team embraces the tradition of 16 league titles and recent Quaker Cup championships, while preparing players for the collegiate level.

Program History at AFS
Boys Basketball at Abington Friends School is a long-standing and celebrated part of the school’s athletic tradition, dating back to its establishment as an interscholastic sport when coeducation was reintroduced in the 1970s.
Since joining the Friends Schools League (FSL) in 1981, AFS has built a legacy of excellence, capturing a record-setting 16 FSL championships—including an unprecedented eight consecutive titles from 1991 to 1997.
Under legendary coach Steve Chadwin, who led the program for 40 seasons and compiled 649 wins, the Roos became one of the premier basketball programs in the region.
