Baseball

From first swing to championship runs, AFS Baseball fosters growth, perseverance, and a lifelong love of the game.
Varsity Baseball is a spring sport open to all Upper School students and skilled 8th graders. The roster typically includes around 15 players and competes in over 20 games each season against both league and non-league opponents.
Practices and games are held five to six times per week.

Build Your Swing.
Middle School baseball introduces players to core fundamentals—hitting mechanics, fielding technique, base running, and situational awareness—on a smaller diamond. With consistent practices and a full spring schedule, athletes gain confidence and develop the skills needed for upper school play.

Grow Strong Together.
JV baseball emphasizes sharpening mechanics, learning advanced defensive alignments, and improving game IQ through competitive match experience. With steady coaching and a no-cut environment, players deepen their commitment to the team while preparing to step into the speed and demands of Varsity.

Make Your Pitch.
Varsity athletes train daily in hitting, pitching, and defensive strategy, competing in a challenging 20-game schedule that blends Friends Schools League rivalries with non-league matchups. Carrying forward a tradition of championships and postseason success, the team blends competitiveness with sportsmanship, building players ready for college and beyond.

Program History at AFS
Baseball has a long and rich history at Abington Friends School, dating back to the 1890s when students organized informal games with other local schools. The modern interscholastic program took shape in the 1970s with the return of coeducation and became an official member of the Friends Schools League (FSL) in 1983.
Since then, AFS Baseball has earned a reputation for both competitiveness and sportsmanship, capturing FSL championships in 1990 and 2003 and making 12 postseason appearances. The team has also won the FSL’s Quaker Cup in 2017 and 2025 and claimed the PAISAA Commonwealth Cup in 2025, finishing with the second-most wins in program history.
Alumni have gone on to play at the collegiate level at institutions such as Central Connecticut State, Ursinus College, and Gettysburg College.
