It's a Great Day to Be a Roo

Our Approach

At Abington Friends School, athletics are an integral part of the student experience—building confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership.

Athletics at AFS balances competitive excellence with a deep commitment to sportsmanship, inclusivity, and personal growth, ensuring that every student-athlete finds joy and meaning in participation. Our athletics philosophy mirrors our classroom philosophy: developmentally appropriate opportunities that encourage growth, challenge, and exploration.

Students in Grades 5–12 participate in seasonal interscholastic and instructional programs that build skills, foster friendships and support healthy lifestyles. Together, we foster a supportive environment where athletics strengthen not only individuals, but also the fabric of the AFS community.

All Roos abide by the Friends Schools League sportsmanship guidelines

Developing Players at All-Levels

Across all grade levels, students are encouraged to try multiple sports, embrace challenges, and experience the rewards of teamwork and perseverance.

Many of our student-athletes go on to compete at the collegiate level, while all leave AFS with a deeper understanding of themselves and how they wish to move through the world.

  • Beginning in Lower School, students are introduced to the joy of movement and skill development through Physical Education and Athletics Enrichment. These early experiences lay the groundwork for healthy, active lives and build confidence in a supportive, inclusive environment.
  • From fifth through twelfth grade, students have the opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletics and instructional programs tailored to a range of interests and ability levels. Whether students are discovering a new sport or striving toward competitive goals, our program encourages exploration, growth, and teamwork.

Sportsmanship First

We hold our athletes to the highest standards of sportsmanship, asking them to be role models on and off the field and to embody fairness, integrity, and respect in all settings, including social media.

Playing Time Philosophy

Every student deserves the chance to test their skills in competition. Playing time decisions emphasize growth and team development, and coaches communicate openly with players about their roles.

Communication and Community

We value open, respectful communication between coaches, students, and families. Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact coaches directly to set up conversations outside the heat of competition.

Friends Schools League

The League's principles guide us in creating a positive and inclusive sports culture, where success is measured not only by performance but by the character and care shown before, during and after contests.

As a founding member of the Friends Schools League, we uphold a shared vision of athletics as a powerful setting for growth and learning. We value sportsmanship, equity, and community as central to every athletic endeavor, and we expect all participants—students, coaches, and families—to support one another in a spirit of mutual respect.
