Global Travel

Global Travel
AFS provides Middle and Upper School students the opportunity to travel to locations far and wide while forming deep connections with people, places and ideas.
Through each year’s diverse selection of trips, we aim to cultivate inquisitive learners who understand their personal obligation to the global community and are prepared to engage with the world.
Chaperoned Trips
Our chaperoned trips focus on experiential learning and cultural immersion, with each exploration followed by reflections, discussions, and activities that foster deeper thinking. Trips are generally 6 to 10 days long, and all student travelers are phone-free to encourage full presence and engagement.
Upper School
Please know that in recent years we have received more interest in trips than we had capacity to accommodate, so a trip application does not guarantee acceptance. When we put trip rosters together, we consider group dynamics, an applicant’s potential for growth, and how a student engages with the AFS community.
Middle School
Quaker Exchange Programs
AFS partners with two international Friends schools as part of a Quaker Exchange program for Upper School students. AFS students are matched with a student at a partner school and travel unchaperoned to the partner school and stay with host families or board on site. Likewise, partner students will travel and stay with AFS families at a separate date.
Starting this year, we are also excited to offer a chaperoned exchange trip for two to three Middle School students with Pickering College near Toronto, Canada.
Each program is open to specific grade levels. Interested students and families should
- plan to attend an information night in the fall
- complete a written application and interview (more information available at the information night)
Once AFS determines a list of nominees, we work with our partner schools to see if all nominees can be matched with an exchange partner.
The main expense for the trip is the airfare. Most costs are reciprocal for hosting (meals, transportation). Families organize their own travel, and AFS does not collect any money. We do ask that AFS students travel together.
