Two AFS Seniors Win National Merit Scholarships

Seniors Lucy Silbaugh and Makarios Chung have won recognition as Merit Scholars and each was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They are among a select group of excellent students nationwide to receive the scholarships.

The competition began in October 2014 when 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools across the nation took the PSAT exams. After completing multiple rounds of the contest, only 7,500 will receive scholarships for college this year. The National Merit Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, according to the contest.

This year, 10 Abington Friends students were either National Merit Finalists or received letters of commendation.
