AFS Team Sends a Message in Fight Against Breast Cancer

About two dozen AFS community members took their yoga mats to the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on May 21, joining 1,800 other people in a Reach & Raise yoga practice that raised funds for Living Beyond Breast Cancer. The AFS team raised $2,641 for the cause, according to English Teacher Jenny Burkholder.

Jenny helped organize the AFS team, along with Rosanne Mistretta, Director of the Center for Experiential Learning, junior Emily Fishman and the Community Service Council.

Jenny was among three women honored this past November at Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s 25th Anniversary Butterfly Ball for using their personal experience with breast cancer to help others facing the disease. Sadly, a fellow award recipient at the ceremony that night, Ayanna Kalasunas, died last week of complications from breast cancer at age 37.

“It was an inspiring and emotional morning,” Jenny said, adding that she and the rest of the AFS team took a moment on Sunday morning to pay a personal tribute to Ayanna. “We shouted her name into the bright blue sky!” Jenny said.
