AFS Swimmers Place in FSL Championships

Swimmers Evan Steinberg ’17 and Michelle Lebed ’19 led the way on February 11 when the varsity swimming team competed in the 2017 Friends Schools League Swim Championships at the George School.

Michelle earned second place in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.14, eclipsing the George School pool record. She also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.54. Evan finished third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.71 and fourth in the 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:16.95.

The AFS relay teams also scored points in the meet, with the girls 200 IM relay team of Chloe Cohen, Taylor Plenty, Michelle Lebed and Rebecca Macey picking up 4 team points for their 5th place finish in 2:15.75. Chloe, Rebecca, Michelle and Seri Fleming notched 2 team points for their 6th place finish in the girls 400 freestyle relay.

Meanwhile, the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay squad, made up of Morgann Thain, Vijay Kumar, Michael Carpenter and Evan Steinberg, earned 2 team points for their 6th place finish in 2:00.14.

Overall, the varsity girls’ team placed fifth overall and earned 16 points, a program-best since swimming became a varsity sport in 2007-2008. The varsity boys’ team earned seventh place with 9 points.

Four AFS swimmers will continue their season, competing at the Easterns Swimming & Diving Championships on February 24 and 25 at Franklin & Marshall College. They are Evan Steinberg, Michelle Lebed, Chloe Cohen and 8th grader Madison Lush.
