AFS Faculty Member To Film Pilot For The Food Network

Middle School English Teacher Sunshine O’Donnell and her friend, Tracy Phillips, have been contacted by an executive producer for The Food Network, who asked if the network could film the pair creating a “spectacular event cake” for a new show, “Ridiculous Cakes,” which will be hosted by famed chef Alton Brown.

Sunshine and her friend agreed, and the filming will take place on October 16 and 17 at Tracy’s kitchen in Mount Airy. Sunshine said the cakes they have created are nothing like birthday cakes, but are really intricate structures that just happen to be made of cake batter and sculpted chocolate.

The invitation to be part of the show came out of the blue. Sunshine and Tracy years ago abandoned their CakeLabStudio, where they once made these cakes, but images of the cakes — including a seven-tier Buddhist temple cake (above) that was the centerfold for a global couture cake magazine — remained on the Internet. Those photos are what led The Food Network to come calling.

Sunshine, who was initially reluctant to participate, eventually sent an invitation to friends to watch the filming and be part of this made-up event. She told them that it doesn’t matter to the network that “a) we don’t own a bakery, (b) don’t make cakes anymore or c) don’t have any event for which we need to design a cake.”

The design Sunshine and Tracy did settle on will feature a 30-inch-tall white chocolate statue of a woman with wings (it will be made from hundreds of rice-paper feathers and edible gold) rising from rubble in a moment of rebirth. To have some reason for the cake, they invited a friend who is turning 40 to be the guest of honor for the pretend event.

As Sunshine said, in her invitation to friends: “You know I’m usually a stickler for authenticity, but this is showbiz!”

We will be sure to follow-up with Sunshine and report out about the filming of the show and when and if it will premiere on television.
