Eighth Grade
Our students are excited to reach eighth grade, where they are finally the leaders of the Middle School. The theme of leadership is a steady thread throughout the work of this grade, starting with our class retreat to Timbertops camp in the Poconos at the beginning of the school year. At Timbertops, we discuss what it means to be a leader, what the students want their legacy in the Middle School to be and how they want to define themselves.

Eighth grade comes with high expectations, increased freedom to work independently and caring, thoughtful mentorship from teachers and advisors. Two major projects engage eighth graders from fall through spring—the Eighth Grade Independent Study and the Independent Science Project—and by the time they enter ninth grade they are in no doubt that they can work on their own, hit deadlines, deal with setbacks and remain committed to a project over time.
