What is the SIP Application process?
     After the SIP Coordinator meets with the class, seniors decide if they are going to select projects from the SIP Database or develop projects on their own. The planning period for SIP is the last week of January through February. Each week in Adviser Group, students will have a task to complete for SIP. Applications are due in early March. The SIP Committee reviews all applications before spring break.

       Option #1: A senior develops an area of academic interest. The student meets with a faculty adviser to develop the details of the formal study.
     If students are working in a group, the entire group and the faculty adviser shape the readings, research, and travel (if necessary).
     After the student or the group has formalized the details of the project with the faculty member, the student or the group submits an application to the SIP Committee for review.
     When the application is approved, students may begin working on the project.

     Option #2: A senior selects a project from the AFS SIP database. Sites include service, the arts, arts administration, business, education, engineering, film/TV/video production, law, medicine, science and technology, and travel. After a senior has decided s/he is interested in a specific site,  s/he submits a Preliminary Application to the SIP Committee for review.
     When the Preliminary Application is approved, the senior then contacts the SIP Mentor and meets him/her. The Mentor then submits a SIP Mentor-Student Form to let the SIP Committee know the precise shape of the project.
  
      Option #3: A senior designs an individual project. Choosing this option requires a student to work on her own to research the site or the work, contact an acceptable mentor, arrange to meet if the mentor is available, and formalize the details of the project with the mentor.
     Once a student has developed the project and met with the mentor, the student submits an application to the SIP Committee for review.
    A student who wishes to design his/her own project will be able to consult a member of the SIP Committee for guidance, but the final responsibility for the project belongs to the student.        The faculty hopes that every senior will select and develop a meaningful SIP Project. In particular, the SIP Committee and Senior Advisers are committed to helping the senior class reach 100% participation. If, however, a senior does not apply for SIP, then the senior will be required to be at school each day from 8 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. during the SIP Period (May 11-June 1) to do academic work and/or school service that s/he must complete before s/he graduates.
