Academics / Upper School / Advisory Program

barb-h-Advisory.jpgAt the opening of school, each student is assigned to an advisor who oversees the general academic and social well-being of each student within an advising group of about ten students. In general, advisors meet with their advising groups once each week in Upper School and twice each week in Middle School for discussions and group activities, and with individual students as needed. If difficulties arise, the advisor will contact the family directly and meet more frequently with the student.

Advisors in each grade are organized into grade teams, led by a grade dean.  The teams meet frequently to plan advisory and grade activities.  The assistant directors of the Upper School and Dean of Students in the Middle School oversee the advisory program and supervise the advisors and grade deans.

Advisors also act as liaisons between home and school. To initiate this role, advisors make introductory phone calls to families during the first three weeks of school. Families will have opportunities to meet advisors at Back to School Night and at the quarter conferences. Ongoing communication between the advisor and the family will continue throughout the year. In addition, advisors can support students in initiating meetings with teachers when necessary and can help students think through any issues or concerns that arise during the school day.

The advisory program at AFS supports students’ academic, social, and personal growth and helps guide them in becoming responsible members of a Friends school community.
