mission and philosophy
The Abington Friends School athletic program strives to develop students as athletes, build a sense of community and develop teams and individuals that are consistently successful at all levels of play and within the Friends Schools League. The School is committed to providing the athletic facilities, equipment and coaches essential to an excellent athletic program.

The athletic program at AFS embodies the core values of the School through attention to student-athletes’ physical, moral, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. Developing and maintaining physical fitness, learning the skills and strategies of the game and developing good sportsmanship are essential outcomes of each team experience. The physical and mental challenges of athletic competition, combined with the support of teammates and coaches, offer student-athletes the opportunity to develop self-confidence, commitment to others and individual leadership skills fundamental to their long-term growth.

Athletics are an integral part of AFS's educational program. As in the classroom, students are offered a range of developmentally appropriate experiences. Beginning in the Lower School afterschool program, the emphasis is on finding areas of interest, experiencing the joy of athletic participation and beginning to develop skills. In Middle School, student-athletes continue to develop their individual talents while experiencing with their teammates the winning and losing that comes with athletic competition. Our Upper School program continues to provide experiences for all interested students. The athletic department offers a range of interscholastic teams and non-competitive options with the goal of supporting the development of the whole child. At the highest levels of play, our goal is to develop student-athletes who are skilled, consistently successful in the FSL and prepared, if they desire and have the ability, to continue their competitive athletic experience in college.
